This Phone Number Cannot Be Used for Verification: Fix

Published: 5 min read Written by:  Published by: SMSVAR

"This phone number cannot be used for verification" means Google will not accept that number to verify a new account right now. In most cases the number has reached the limit Google places on how many times one number can be used for verification; less often it is a landline or VoIP number, or simply mistyped. Waiting rarely helps when the limit is the cause. The fix Google itself recommends is to use a different mobile number, and below we explain how to do that without losing control of your account.

What the error actually means

Google's account verification help page is short and clear on this: to protect people from abuse, Google limits how many times a phone number can be used for verification. A related message, "This phone number has been used too many times for verification", has the same cause and the same fix.

The limit is not about you personally. A number counts toward it every time it verifies a Google Account, whether that was you years ago, a family member, or a previous owner of a recycled number. Google does not publish the exact number, and it can change.

Common causes and how to tell them apart

If you are not sure what kind of number you have, our explainer on non-VoIP vs VoIP numbers shows why sign-up forms treat them differently.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Check the format. Select the correct country and enter the number without the leading 0. Spaces don't matter; the country code does.
  2. Stop retrying for a while. If you have tried several times, leave it for a few hours and try exactly once. This clears a temporary block but not the long-term limit.
  3. Use a different mobile number. Google suggests a number belonging to a friend, a family member, or one from a different carrier. Once the account exists, replace it with your own recovery number in your security settings.
  4. Look for a skip option. In some sign-up flows Google shows the phone step as optional. It does not appear for everyone, but it is worth checking before you hunt for another number.
  5. Use a one-time number. If you have no other number to hand, a one-time mobile number can receive the code for you. We explain how below.

Verifying Gmail with a one-time number

A one-time number is a mobile number that receives the single code you need and nothing else. On smsvar.com the process looks like this:

  1. Create an account and top up your balance; you can compare countries on our prices page first.
  2. Choose Gmail as the service and pick a country. A number is assigned instantly.
  3. Enter it on Google's verification screen. The code appears on the order screen in your panel.
  4. If no code arrives within 20 minutes, the order is cancelled and the fee returns to your balance automatically.

Google sometimes rejects numbers that have been used heavily. If that happens, cancel the order instead of waiting and try another country; our guide to the best countries for Gmail verification lists options, and the Gmail verification page shows the current choices. If you are new to this, start with how receiving SMS online works, free versus paid.

One rule matters more than any other: follow Google's terms. One-time numbers are for verifying an account you will actually use, not for creating accounts in bulk, which gets accounts suspended.

After the account is created

A number you borrowed or used once should not stay attached to your account. Take five minutes to:

  • Add your own recovery email address.
  • Add your own phone as the recovery phone and remove the one you used for sign-up, if it isn't yours.
  • Turn on 2-Step Verification, ideally with a passkey or Google prompts rather than SMS.
  • Save your backup codes somewhere safe.

The reason is simple: a temporary phone number can later belong to someone else, and your account should never depend on it.

What about Google Voice?

A similar message appears when you try to link a phone to a Google Voice number: Google asks you to verify with another number. Google Voice has its own rules, including that it works with US numbers, so the fixes above for Gmail do not fully apply there.

Frequently asked questions

Will the error go away if I wait?

Only if it was caused by too many recent attempts; then a few hours to a day is usually enough. If the number has reached Google's verification limit, waiting typically doesn't change anything, and Google's own advice is to use a different number.

How many accounts can one number verify?

Google does not disclose the number and adjusts it over time. Shared family numbers and recycled numbers reach the limit faster because earlier verifications by other people count too.

Can I create a Gmail account without a phone number?

Sometimes. In some sign-up flows Google lets you skip the phone step. It depends on factors Google doesn't publish, such as the device and region, so it is not guaranteed. If the option doesn't appear, you need a number that can receive SMS.

Does the same error appear on YouTube or Google Play?

Yes. YouTube, Google Play and other Google services all use the same Google Account, so the verification step and its limits are shared. The fixes in this guide apply to all of them.

If Google keeps rejecting your number, start from our virtual number page: choose Gmail and a country, see the price before you buy, and pay only when the code arrives.
