Why does Discord ask for a phone number?
Discord does not require a phone at sign-up; accounts are opened with an email address alone. Discord phone verification comes into play in two situations:
- the server you want to join has switched on the phone verification security level, or
- your account has been locked after activity the system read as suspicious.
In both cases a six-digit discord verification code is sent to whatever number the account has on file.
Server verification levels explain most requests
More often than not the phone step is demanded by the server you are joining rather than by Discord itself. Server administrators choose from a ladder of verification levels, and at the highest setting an account must be verified by phone before it can post anything at all.
That is why a perfectly healthy account can find the message box greyed out in one community and working everywhere else. The problem is the server configuration, not your account. Verify once and the barrier lifts across every server that uses this setting.
How to get a Discord verification number
- Create your account and add credit.
- Pick Discord from the service list, then the country you want the number from.
- The number is reserved instantly. Enter it in the phone field under Discord user settings, with the country code and no leading zero.
- Read the code from the panel and submit it.
The flow normally takes a minute or two. If no code arrives, cancel rather than wait: the amount is credited back to your balance, so moving one line down the country list costs nothing.
One number, one account
Discord binds a phone number to a single account. Try to add the same line to a second account and you get a this phone number is already in use warning, which cannot be cleared without removing it from the first account.
With a discord virtual number that limit has usually been used up by whoever held the line before you. Waiting achieves nothing when this warning appears; cancel the transaction and take a fresh number. The unused one is refunded to your balance automatically.
Removing the number afterwards, and what it costs you
You can delete the number once verification is finished: User Settings, then My Account, then Remove Phone Number. Discord requires a confirmed email address on the account before it will let you do this.
There is a catch that sets Discord apart from other platforms. Removing the number also removes the verified status: the account counts as not phone-verified again, and permission to post in the strictest servers closes with it. Verification here is not a permanent stamp, it depends on the number staying attached to the account.
Why a rented number often suits Discord better
Because of that rule, Discord is one of the platforms a single-use number fits least comfortably. When the line goes back to the pool the account itself keeps working, but access to servers that demand phone verification goes with it.
If you plan to use the account long term in communities with that setting, a rented number or your own permanent line is the right choice. For a one-off registration, or for servers that never ask, a single-use number does the job.
Two-factor authentication and backup codes
Discord builds two-factor authentication around an authenticator app, with SMS offered only as a secondary fallback. On an account verified with a temporary line, never switch that SMS fallback on: the moment the number returns to the pool the fallback is worthless.
Save the backup codes generated during setup. Discord shows them once, and if you lose the phone holding the authenticator app they are the only way back into the account.
The captcha loop and locked accounts
A common experience on new accounts is a captcha screen that keeps coming back. There are usually three causes: a VPN or a shared IP address, joining a large number of servers in a short time, and sending friend requests one after another.
If you are in that loop, turn the VPN off, close the app, wait half an hour and sign in again from the same network. Should the account lock completely, Discord asks for phone verification to release it — and if the number is no longer yours, that lock stays shut.
Nitro and the number
A Nitro subscription is tied to the account and the payment method, not to the phone number, so it continues after the line goes back to the pool. Cancelling is done inside the app and needs no SMS at all.
Some Nitro gifts and promotions are the exception: to limit abuse they require the receiving account to be phone-verified at the moment the offer is claimed.
Bots and the developer portal
Creating a bot means signing in to the developer portal with the same identity as your Discord account. The bot token belongs to the account, not to the number, so a line that has returned to the pool changes nothing about an existing bot.
Discord does require verification for bots once they pass a certain size, and a phone-verified account is part of that process. If you are planning a serious bot project, verifying the account with a permanent number is the sturdier route.
Creating and running your own server
Opening a server needs no phone verification; you can create one immediately after registering. The requirement only appears when you join somebody else high-security server.
You set the level on your own server under Server Settings, then Moderation, then Verification Level. Medium or high is enough to keep spam accounts out in most communities; the strictest setting also excludes genuine members who simply have no phone on their account.
Banned accounts
When Discord bans an account it flags the number and the device alongside it. Registering again with the same number will not work, and a new account opened with a new number can still be flagged when it signs in from the same device.
The route for disputing a ban is a support ticket. Taking a new number is not an appeal method and it is against our terms of use: using a virtual number to get around a platform ban is grounds for closing your account here.
Common error messages
- "This phone number is already in use" — the line is attached to another Discord account. Cancel and take a new one.
- "This phone number is invalid" — Discord does not accept that number range. Try a different country.
- The code arrives but is rejected — it has probably expired. Request a new one and use the most recent message.
- You cannot type in a server — that server sits at a high verification level and needs a number saved on the account.
Choosing a country, and where these figures come from
Discord places no restriction on the country the number belongs to. In practice the choice changes two things: price and current stock. The table on this page starts at the lowest price and is read from live inventory on every page load rather than typed by hand, so the figure you see is the real position at that moment. Because Discord only asks for verification in specific circumstances, demand here is uneven and cheap countries empty quickly during busy periods. Current figures for every platform are in the price list, and the way the service works in general is set out on our virtual number page.
Legal and safe use
A virtual number is for opening a second account, registering without handing over your personal line, or clearing a one-off verification screen. Opening accounts in someone else name, evading a platform ban, fraud and bulk automated registration are against our terms of use and grounds for closing your account. Messages sent to the number are visible only in your own session; once the transaction ends the number returns to the pool and past messages cannot be retrieved.
