What is Telegram SMS verification?
Telegram does not accept email registration; an account is tied directly to a phone number. If you would rather not use your own line, or you are opening a second account, you need a temporary number to receive the confirmation code. A virtual number solves that step: you enter the number in Telegram and the code shows up in our panel.
Telegram has one behaviour worth knowing about: if the number already has an active session, the code is delivered through the Telegram app rather than by SMS. A fresh number has no session, so the code arrives as an SMS and registration proceeds without trouble.
How to get a Telegram number
- Sign in to your account and add credit.
- Pick Telegram from the service list, then the country.
- Enter the reserved number in the phone field in the Telegram app.
- Read the five-digit code from the panel and type it into the app.
A telegram virtual number is reserved for you alone for the length of the transaction, so the incoming message is visible in your session and nobody else. The flow normally takes a minute or two.
Which country should you pick?
Telegram does not restrict the country of the number. The choice affects price and current availability. If one country is out of stock, working down the list is the quickest route; the list starts at the lowest price.
Telegram may apply extra checks more often to certain country prefixes where registration volume is high. If you hit a problem, trying a different country is usually enough.
Why the code sometimes lands in the app instead of an SMS
Telegram sends the login code to the active session, not to the handset. If an account tied to that number is already open on some device, the telegram verification code appears as an in-app message there and no SMS is sent. A newly reserved number has no such session, which is why the first registration always comes through as an SMS.
This has a useful consequence in the other direction. Once your number returns to the pool and somebody else takes it, your own login codes do not drop into their app. The code follows the session, and the session is yours.
Check your active sessions straight away
As soon as the account is open, go to Settings, Privacy and Security, Active Sessions. Every device attached to the account is listed there, and anything you do not recognise can be terminated with a single tap.
The same screen holds the self-destruct timer. The default is six months: if you never open the account in that period, Telegram deletes it along with all its messages. On an account opened with a temporary number that setting can be used deliberately, either shortened for a throwaway account or extended for one you plan to keep.
A username lets you chat without sharing the number
Telegram supports usernames, so people can reach you without knowing your phone number at all. Set one under Settings, Username.
Then open Privacy, Phone Number and switch it to Nobody. After that, even people who have the number saved in their contacts cannot match it to your account. On an account opened with a temporary number these two settings are worth doing first, before anything else.
Changing the number: moving the account to a permanent line
Telegram lets you change the number without deleting the account: Settings, My Account, Change Number. Chats, groups and channels all move across; a code is sent to the new number and the switch completes.
This is the cleanest way to turn an account opened with a temporary number into a permanent one. The change works as long as your session is open, but doing it while the number is still assigned to you avoids every complication.
Two-step verification and the cloud password
If an account has a cloud password (two-step verification) set, that password is requested after the SMS code. We do not hold it and it cannot be obtained with a virtual number; only the account holder knows it. This is not an obstacle when you are opening a new account.
If you forget the cloud password later, Telegram makes the account wait seven days and then allows a reset, and the reset wipes the messages as well. When you set the password Telegram asks for a recovery email address: do not skip it. With a temporary number, that email is the only way back into the account.
Sending limits on a brand-new account
Telegram limits how freely a new account can message people who do not have it in their contacts. If you hit the limit, the app shows a restricted for spam warning. The restriction lifts on its own as the account ages and collects no further reports.
You can also write to SpamBot, which reports the current status and lifts the limit when it judges that appropriate. The best protection is simply not to send bulk messages on the first day.
Contact matching and privacy
Telegram matches accounts by uploading the numbers in your address book, and the reverse holds too: if your number is in somebody else address book, they see you on Telegram. On an account opened with a recycled number, people who knew the previous holder may see you in their list.
To stop that, open Settings, Privacy and Security, Contacts, turn off synchronisation and delete the contacts already uploaded. The action takes effect immediately and cannot be undone.
Secret chats stay on one device
End-to-end encrypted secret chats are not backed up to the cloud; they live only on the device where they were started, and they do not move even if you change the number. Ordinary chats are stored in the cloud and appear on every device.
On an account opened with a temporary number, keeping anything important in ordinary chats protects your access if the device is lost.
Groups, channels, bots and Premium
Once the account exists, you can create groups, open channels and run bots without ever needing the number again. A bot token from BotFather is tied to your account, not to the phone line, and channel ownership works the same way. As long as you do not lose the session, the number going back into the pool has no effect on your channel.
Telegram Premium is also attached to the account rather than the number, so it survives a number change. One of its features is hiding the phone number entirely and being reachable by username only, which suits accounts opened this way.
Transferring ownership of a channel or group is worth planning ahead: both sides need two-step verification switched on, and the account handing over ownership must have had that protection for at least seven days. Set the cloud password on day one and the seven-day clock starts then.
Signing in on desktop and web
Telegram Web and the desktop app are opened by scanning a QR code from the session on your phone, with no number required. If the QR option is unavailable the app falls back to asking for the number, and the code then lands in the app on the phone.
So on an account opened with a temporary number, always use the QR route for desktop. If you try the number route while the phone session is also closed, you will not be able to get in.
Protecting the account without the number
- Set a username as soon as the account opens.
- Hide the phone number under Privacy.
- Turn on two-step verification and add a recovery email.
- Switch off contact synchronisation.
- Keep the session on your main device open.
With those five steps done, the number returning to the pool makes no practical difference to your account.
If the code never arrives
When the window closes without a code, the transaction is cancelled and the amount is credited back to your balance. You are not charged for an unused number, and there is no ticket to open.

Where the figures on this page come from
The country count and the starting price are not typed by hand; they are read from our own inventory on every page load, so the figure you see is the live position. Because Telegram verification favours voice calls in a few countries, numbers from those countries are used less often in the SMS flow and are priced differently.
Current figures for every platform are on the price list, and the general mechanics of telegram sms verification and the rest of the service are explained on our virtual number page.
