How to get a United States virtual number

  1. Choose the platform

Pick the service you need from the United States list below and see its price.

  2. Take a United States number

The number is assigned to you alone and is never reused for the same service.

  3. Read the code

The incoming verification code appears in your panel. If no code arrives, the charge returns to your balance automatically.

Do you really need a US number?

The honest answer is usually no. Most global apps do not care about the country code; the belief that "you need an American number" is mostly habit. US lines sit on the expensive side of our average, so choosing one without cause simply costs you money.

There are genuine cases: region-locked beta programmes, services that launch only in North America, and platforms whose payment provider is US-based. This page exists for those.

Where do our users spend US lines?

In our own data Telegram leads, followed by Wolt and Instagram Threads. One detail stands out: WhatsApp is not first here — for WhatsApp people pick far cheaper countries, which is the sensible call.

The limit worth knowing about

A share of American services recognise virtual number ranges and reject them. This is not specific to SMSVAR; it applies across the market. On our side the consequence is clear — if no code arrives the charge is refunded automatically. Still, you should know the possibility exists before you buy.

US banking, the IRS and official institutions also will not work with a single-use line; those systems require the number to match a registered subscription.

Looking for something cheaper?

If the service you are verifying does not check the country code, a Canadian or UK line is usually cheaper than the US. Both countries have wide platform coverage.

The +1 dialling code and the US phone number format

A US phone number is ten digits behind the country code +1: a three-digit area code, a three-digit exchange code, then four digits. Written out it reads +1 (XXX) XXX-XXXX, and Americans normally give it as the ten digits alone because the +1 is assumed at home.

Two things surprise people coming from Europe. First, there is no mobile prefix. Landlines and mobiles share the same area codes, so nothing in the digits tells you whether a number can receive a text — the only way to find out is to send one. Second, the area code no longer pins a number to a place: numbers move with their owners between states, and overlay codes mean one city can carry several.

Canada uses the same plan and the same +1 prefix, which is why a form that asks for "a +1 number" will normally take either. That is the whole basis for the cheaper route further down this page.

Which services a USA virtual number works for

Start by separating the two cases, because they lead to different purchases. If the sign-up form has an open country selector, the platform does not care and an American line is simply an expensive way to finish the same task. If the form is fixed to the United States, refuses anything that does not start with +1, or the app is not offered outside North America, then a US line is what the job needs.

Beyond that, one more group matters: services that identify pooled number ranges and decline them outright. That check is widespread on American platforms, more so than in most other countries, and no provider in this market can defeat it. What we can be exact about is the money — a number that receives no code is refunded, so a failed attempt costs time rather than balance.

Why the IRS and US banks need a line of your own

The block is not arbitrary and it is worth understanding before you spend anything. American financial institutions and federal services route a one-time code to a number already recorded on your account, and the enrolment that puts a number there is itself an identity check. A line you took five minutes ago was never part of that record, so there is nothing for the code to be sent to.

Layered on top is line-type lookup. Banks, brokerages and tax services commonly query what kind of line a number sits on and refuse anything that is not a conventional mobile subscription. Both mechanisms point the same way: keep your own line for money and official records, and use a virtual number for registrations and short-lived verifications.

Why the pool changes during the day

Nothing in the table above is typed by hand — it is read from live inventory each time the page loads. Lines are taken and returned continuously, so a platform that shows no American stock now may have some in an hour, and checking back is usually faster than hammering the same order.

Price moves for one reason: carrier cost. A cheap country is one where carrying a short message is cheap, and the United States is not one of those. That cost shifts through the day, which is why the figure you see can differ from your last visit even though nothing changed on your account. Current numbers for every country are on the price list.

Single-use number or a rental?

A single-use number holds for one code window, then returns to the pool. It suits a registration, a one-off verification, or an account you will not be asked to confirm again. It does not suit anything that comes back for the same number later — a password reset, a sign-in from a new device, a delivery driver calling you.

American platforms make this distinction sharper than most, because a good number of them keep the phone number as a standing security factor rather than a one-time gate. If you plan to keep the account, open it with a single-use line and immediately move the security number to one of your own, or to an authenticator app, before the session ends. A rental is only worth it when you must hold a single number over a long period; what each option covers is set out on our virtual number page.

Common error messages

  • "Enter a valid US phone number" — ten digits after +1, with the area code included and no extra leading digit.
  • "This number cannot receive text messages" — the platform has run a line-type lookup and declined the range. Another American line rarely changes it; a different country sometimes does.
  • "Phone number already in use" — the line has been attached to that platform before. Cancel and take a fresh one; the amount comes back to your balance.
  • Nothing arrives in the panel — confirm the service you chose at order time matches the platform you are registering with. With the wrong service selected the message is routed elsewhere and your number stays silent.

United States or Canada?

Because both countries sit inside the same +1 plan, a Canadian number passes most checks that are written as "must be a North American number". Where a service is genuinely US-specific — it asks for a state, a US address, or is not offered outside the country — a Canadian line will not rescue it and you need the American one.

The practical order is short. Ask whether the form demands the United States specifically; if not, try Canada first. If the country code is irrelevant altogether, the United Kingdom and Indonesia finish the same verification for less again.

Legal and safe use

A US virtual number is for registering without handing over your personal line, opening a second account where the platform permits it, or completing a verification that will not be repeated. Opening accounts in someone else name, fraud and spam are against our terms of use and grounds for closing your account.

Messages sent to the number are visible only in your own session. Once the transaction ends the line returns to the pool and past messages cannot be retrieved — not by the next person who takes it, and not by you.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Region-locked services, apps that launch only in North America, and platforms that require a US country code. Most global apps do not check the country code, in which case a cheaper country makes more sense.

Supply cost is high on American lines and demand is heavy. Our average price for the US sits above many other countries.

Ten digits after the +1 country code: a three-digit area code, a three-digit exchange code and four more digits. There is no separate mobile prefix, so the digits alone do not say whether a line can receive SMS.

No. Some recognise and reject virtual number ranges, which is true across this market. If no code arrives, the charge returns to your balance automatically.

No. Those institutions require the number to match a registered subscription; single-use lines do not pass that check.

If the service does not check the country code, Canadian, UK or Indonesian lines are noticeably cheaper. You can compare them on our pricing page.

The number appears in your panel the moment you order. The incoming code is listed on the same screen; no app or forwarding is needed.
