If your Telegram code is not received, the most common reason is that Telegram did not send it by SMS at all: when your number is already logged in on another phone, computer or the web version, the code goes to the official "Telegram" chat in that app first. The other usual causes are SMS filtering, a mistyped country code and the "too many attempts" limit. Check your other devices first, then work through the eight fixes below.
Where Telegram sends your login code
Telegram uses several channels, and the order matters:
- Inside the Telegram app. If the number is logged in anywhere else, the code arrives in a chat called "Telegram" with a blue verification badge on that device.
- SMS. Used when there is no other active session, or when you ask for it after the timer runs out.
- Phone call. Telegram can read the code to you in an automated call. According to Telegram's own FAQ, this is not available with every carrier, and landline numbers are not supported at all.
- Passkey. If you created a passkey while logged in, you can sign in with it instead of a code.
Telegram code not received: 8 fixes
- Open Telegram on your other devices. Look for the chat named "Telegram" on your old phone, Telegram Desktop or web.telegram.org. Most "missing" codes are sitting there.
- Check the number format. Pick the right country and type the number without the leading 0. A UK number written 07700 900123 is entered as +44 7700 900123.
- Let the timer run out. On the code screen Telegram shows a countdown. When it ends, it offers to send the code by SMS or a call. Requesting again before that only adds delay.
- Stop retrying if you see "Too many attempts". Telegram limits how often a number can request codes. Further requests during the cooldown can make it longer, so leave it for several hours before trying once more.
- Check your SMS filters. Phones that filter unknown senders or spam may hide the message. Look in those folders and in your blocked list.
- Try a different network. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, restart the phone and make sure your SIM can receive SMS from international senders.
- Update the app or use another official client. An old version can fail to request the code. Telegram Desktop and the web version use the same account.
- Contact Telegram support. If none of this works, use the official support form linked from the Telegram FAQ and describe exactly which step fails.
What each message means
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "We've sent the code to the Telegram app on your other device" | The number has an active session elsewhere | Open that device and read the code from the "Telegram" chat |
| "Too many attempts, please try again later" | Rate limit on your number | Wait several hours and request only once |
| "Phone number invalid" | Wrong country code or format | Re-enter in international format without the leading 0 |
| No SMS after the timer | Carrier filtering or delivery delay | Choose the call option, check filters, try later |
If your number can't receive the code at all
Sometimes the problem is the number itself: you no longer have that SIM, your carrier blocks international SMS, or you are travelling with a data-only eSIM. Our guide to receiving codes abroad covers the travel case.
For an existing account, Telegram is strict: its FAQ says support can only help if you still have access to the number or to Telegram on another device. If you have neither, the realistic route is asking your carrier for a replacement SIM with the same number.
For a new account, you can register with any mobile number you can receive an SMS on, including a one-time number. Virtual landlines and many VoIP numbers are rejected, which is why the type of number matters; our article on non-VoIP vs VoIP numbers explains the difference. On our Telegram verification page you choose a country, see the price before you buy, and get a full refund to your balance if no code arrives within 20 minutes.
A one-time number is only for receiving that first code. Read when a temporary phone number makes sense before you decide, and follow Telegram's terms of service: no bulk registrations, no spam.
Keep your Telegram account safe after you log in
- Turn on 2-Step Verification. In Settings, under Privacy and Security, set a password. After that, a login needs both the code and your password.
- Add a recovery email. You set it together with the password; it lets you reset the password if you forget it.
- Create a passkey. It lets you log in without waiting for an SMS code next time.
- Review active sessions. In Settings, under Devices, end any session you don't recognise.
- Keep one device logged in. As long as one session is active, future codes arrive in the app instantly.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my Telegram code go to another app instead of SMS?
Because your number is already logged in on another device. Telegram prefers to deliver the code inside the app, where only you can read it. Open Telegram on that phone, computer or browser and look for the chat named "Telegram". If you no longer have that device, wait for the timer and choose SMS or a call.
How long does the "Too many attempts" block last?
Telegram does not publish an exact duration. Users usually report waits from a few hours up to a day. Requesting more codes during the block can extend it, so the best approach is to stop completely, wait, and then request a single code.
Can I log in to Telegram without an SMS code?
Yes, in two cases: when the code is delivered to your Telegram app on another logged-in device, or when you have set up a passkey. That is why keeping at least one session active and creating a passkey makes future logins much easier.
Can I use a virtual number to register on Telegram?
You can register with a one-time mobile number that receives SMS, as long as it is not a landline or a VoIP number that Telegram rejects. Right after signing up, set a 2-Step Verification password and a recovery email so your account never depends on that number again.
