Discord Phone Verification: Why It's Required and How to Complete It

Published: 8 min read Written by:  Published by: SMSVAR

Discord phone verification is required for one of two reasons: a server you joined uses the Highest verification level, or Discord's safety systems flagged activity on your account and showed a "Verification Required" prompt. To complete it, add a valid mobile number in User Settings or through the prompt, then enter the code Discord texts you. Discord's help center says VoIP, landline and burner numbers can't be used.

Why Discord asks you to verify a phone number

Most accounts are created with just an email address, so a "phone number required" moment usually comes later. Where the request comes from changes how you deal with it.

The server's verification level

Server admins choose one of five verification levels, which decide who can send messages in their server:

  • None: anyone can chat right away.
  • Low: the account needs a verified email.
  • Medium: a verified email and an account that has existed for more than five minutes.
  • High: everything in Medium, plus membership in the server for more than ten minutes.
  • Highest: everything above, plus a verified phone number.

Two details explain most of the confusion. A verified phone overrides every other requirement, so a phone-verified account can chat in any server immediately. And the level applies to the whole server, which is why the message box can be grayed out in one community and work everywhere else: it is a server setting, not a fault with your account. Members who don't meet the level can't send text messages or join voice channels. Discord's own article on verification levels shows admins where to change the setting.

Account-level verification prompts

Discord can also ask on its own when its systems see activity that calls for extra confirmation. Its help center lists triggers such as joining many servers in a short time, messaging lots of people who aren't your friends, posting faster than a person plausibly could, and using third-party clients or modified apps. Verifying an email or phone helps show you are not a bot. Discord says it uses the number for safety and security, plus optional features like finding friends from your contacts.

How to verify your phone number on Discord

On desktop or in a browser:

  1. Click the cogwheel next to your username to open User Settings, and stay on My Account.
  2. Next to Phone Number, click Add.
  3. Pick your country code from the dropdown, then enter the remaining digits.
  4. Enter the code from the text message.
  5. If Discord asks, confirm the change with your account password.

On mobile, tap your avatar in the bottom-right corner, then the cogwheel, then Account, and open the Phone field. If you are answering a "Verification Required" prompt instead, press Start Verification and follow the same steps. In every case, the number must not already be attached to another Discord account.

Formatting is the easiest thing to get wrong. After selecting the country code, drop the national leading zero: with a German virtual number, for instance, you would select +49 and enter the rest of the number without the 0.

Discord phone verification errors and how to fix them

What you seeWhat it meansWhat to do
"This phone number is unable to be associated with this account"The number is already on another Discord account; a number can sit on only one account at a timeRemove it from the other account first, or use a different number
Invalid phone numberThe format is wrong, or the line is VoIP, landline or otherwise not a mobile numberRe-enter it in international format and use a mobile number

If the error is about the type of number, our explainer on VoIP vs non-VoIP numbers shows how apps classify lines. And if you used a one-time number from smsvar.com and no SMS arrived within 20 minutes, the order is canceled and refunded to your balance automatically.

Using a one-time number for Discord, responsibly

A one-time number can make sense when you don't want your personal number on a gaming or community account, when your own number can't receive the code, or when you are setting up a separate account for work or a community you run. Before choosing one, weigh what Discord does with the number afterwards:

  • It can be used to sign in. Discord lets people log in with a phone number and reset a password by SMS. If the number is later reassigned, its next holder could request that reset, which is why multi-factor authentication is not optional on these accounts.
  • It is your verified phone. Keeping it on the account keeps you phone-verified; removing it means Highest-level servers will block you again until you add another number.
  • Not every number is accepted. Discord says VoIP, burner and landline numbers can't be used, and its check runs on how the line is classified.

Our guide to when a temporary number is the right tool covers the trade-off in general. If a one-time number fits your situation, create a free account, choose Discord and a country, and compare the current prices per country first. Keep it to an account you are entitled to have: Discord's Community Guidelines forbid using new accounts to evade a platform ban, and a fresh number doesn't change that.

Changing or removing your number later

On desktop, open User Settings, stay on My Account, click Remove next to the phone number and confirm with your password; to switch numbers, add the new one with the same Add button. On mobile, go to Settings, then Account, then Phone, and tap Remove Phone Number. A few rules apply:

  • After a number is removed, Discord applies a waiting period before it can be used on an account again.
  • If you sign in with your phone number rather than an email, add and confirm an email address first so you keep a way in.
  • If your number is stuck on an account you can't access, Discord support can remove it only when you write from the email address on that account.

Lock the account down after verifying

Discord supports three kinds of multi-factor authentication: passkeys or security keys, which it recommends; an authenticator app; and SMS. SMS can only be switched on after an authenticator app is set up, and Discord itself warns that text codes are exposed to SIM-swap attacks. On an account verified with a one-time number, skip SMS entirely and use a passkey or an authenticator app. Then download your backup codes and store them offline, because Discord support can't remove MFA from an account for you. Finally, make sure your email address is verified, since it is your main route back in.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the same phone number on two Discord accounts?

No. Discord attaches a number to one account at a time, and adding it to a second account triggers an error saying it can't be associated with that account. To move it, remove it from the first account and expect a waiting period before Discord accepts it again. A second account needs its own number.

Does Discord accept virtual numbers?

Discord accepts valid mobile numbers and refuses VoIP, landline and burner numbers, judging by how the line is classified rather than where you got it. Some virtual numbers pass that check and some don't. If you want phone verification that lasts, a number you control is the sturdiest choice; with a one-time number, set up MFA right away.

Why can't I chat in a server even after verifying my phone?

A verified phone satisfies every Discord verification level, so the block is coming from somewhere else. Common causes are server roles and channel permissions, a rules screen you haven't accepted yet, or a bot-run verification step the admins added. Check the server's welcome or rules channel, and if you're still stuck, ask the server's admins for help, as Discord's help center suggests.

Can I skip Discord phone verification?

Not in a server set to the Highest level, unless you are an admin or moderator with the right permissions. Many communities use lower levels where a verified email is enough, so the phone step only matters in the servers that demand it. For an account-level prompt, completing the verification is how you restore normal access; Discord support can help if it fails.

Discord phone verification is quick once you know which requirement you are meeting and which number will stay on the account. If you would rather keep your personal number off it, get a number for Discord SMS verification, read the code in your panel, and switch on MFA before you join your first Highest-level server.
